United States Mint
The United States Mint refers to the mint based in the United States of America.
The United States Mint was founded by Congress on April 2nd, 1792. Philadelphia was the original base of the mint. Philadelphia was chosen as it was the nation’s capital at the time.
Increasing demand saw the need to open further facilities over the years, now the United States Mint currently has operations in six different facilities located within the United States. These are based in Washington DC, Philadelphia, West Point, Denver, San Francisco and Fort Knox. Each of these facilities performs unique functions.
Only the West Point branch produces American Eagle gold bullion coins, silver bullion coins and platinum bullion coins.
- Washington DC – Headquarters.
- Philadelphia – Proof and circulation coin production.
- Denver – Circulation coinage only.
- San Francisco – Proof coinage only.
- West Point – Proof coinage, a United States gold bullion reserve, American Silver Eagle Series, American Gold Eagle Series, American Platinum Eagle Series.
