The Austrian Mint is a maker of bullion, they are located in the country of Austria.

History of the Austrian Mint can be linked back to as far as 1194, when a transaction was made with Richard the Lionheart paying 15 tonnes of silver to Duke Leopold VI of Austria in order to free himself from incarceration.

200 years later the wheels were set in motion and the first mint was set up near Hoher Markt, then in the Wollzeile and later in Prince Eugene’s winter palace in Himmelpfortgasse, since the first half of the 19th century the Mint has been at its magnificent home in Heumarkt, central Vienna, where coins are still struck to this day.

Several branches of the mint were set up throughout Austria over the years in locations including Graz, Krems, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Villach. However, when Austria was formed as a republic in 1918 the Vienna location was made the sole mint for production, which is still the case today. The name of the mint was officially changed to the Austrian Mint in 1989, when it became a subsidiary of the Austrian Central Bank.

Don’t let the beautiful historical architecture of the Vienna facility fool you, this is a world class facility with machinery at the mint able to produce up to 750 coins per minute. The Austrian Mint is best known for the production of the Austrian Philharmonic Series, which is available in both gold and silver bullion coins and featuring the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the great organ in the Golden Hall in

Vienna's Musikverein, the concert hall of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. These are one of the world’s most recognised bullion coins.

In addition to gold and silver bullion coins and medallions, the Vienna facility is also responsible for producing circulating currency for Austria, which after Austria joined the Eurozone in 2002, has been the Euro.

The Vienna facility is located in the middle of the city next to Vienna’s largest public park, the Stadtpark. If you are planning a visit to the mint then the closest station is the Stadtpark subway station.
